The exhibition spanned "three major stylistic tendencies which prevailed in painting and sculpture in this area from the 1950's through the 1970's: Southern California purist abstraction, the Bay area preference for the figurative and the painterly, and the native and Oriental sensibility of the Northwest. It recognize[d] in addition the strong photographic tradition of the West Coast and the unique contribution made by California artists to the development of ceramic art." Among the other artists included in the show were Imogen Cunningham, Robert Arneson, and Betye Saar. —Essay by Mary Lou Friedman in the exhibition catalogue
